Libraries in Miami Florida

Information about county, city, and university libraries in the greater Miami area of South Florida. Includes Miami Dade County libraries, the city of Hialeah library, the Miami Beach Regional Library, the North Miami Library, and the libraries of the University of Miami and Miami Dade College.

Main Miami-Dade County Library
The main library in the Miami-Dade Public Library System was located at Bayfront Park for many years but in 1985 it was moved to the Miami-Dade Cultural Center. That center also houses the Historical Museum of South Florida and the Miami Art Museum. The Miami-Dade County Main Library is located at 101 West Flagler Street. Hialeah Public Library
Hialeah's John F. Kennedy Memorial Public Library was established in 1965 but Hialeah has had its own library since before the town was incorporated in 1925. The town's first library was destroyed by the Great Hurricane of 1926. The library was reestablished in the Hialeah City Hall Building and in 1958 the Hialeah Public Library opened in its own building in east Hialeah. After the new library opened in 1965 that building became the Lua A. Curtiss branch Library.

Miami Beach Regional Library
In April of 2005 Miami-Dade County opened a library branch in the Collins Parks Cultural Campus in the city of Miami Beach, a complex that also houses the Bass Museum of Art and the Miami City Ballet. That library is 42,000 square feet in size and in addition to the book sections it has an auditorium, community meeting rooms, a cafe, and an outdoor reading garden.

North Miami Public Library
North Miami Library was established in 1932 by the Biscayne Park Women's Club in 1932 and in 1945 they turned the library over to the town of North Miami. The library was housed in the North Miami City Hall for many years but in 1953 a new library building was constructed and a 1964 addition doubled the size of that building. In 1970 the name of the library was changed to the E. May Avil North Miami Public Library.

College and University Libraries in Miami

University of Miami Libraries
An index to all of the libraries at the University of Miami in Coral Gables including the main Otto G. Richter Library, the Music Library, the Marine and Atmospheric Science Library, the Architecture Library, the Law Library, the Library of Medicine, the Ophthalmology Library, and the Psychiatry Library..

Miami Dade College Libraries
Miami Dade College has a medical library, an inter-American library, and several general reference libraries including those on the MDC campuses in Hialeah, Homestead, Kendall, and Wolfson.
