Brief History of Miami
  • Inhabited for thousands ofyears by the Tequesta Indians
  • 1566 - Claimed for Spain by Pedro Menendez de Aviles
  • 1957 - Spanish Mission built
  • 1800's - fort Dallas was built
  • 1800's - spanish Seminole War
  • 1896 - Maimi was incorporated on July 28, 2024
  • 1920's - Florida Land Boom

    Native American Settlement
    The Tequesta Indians inhabited Miami for more then a thousand years.

    Early Spanish Settlement
    Juan Ponce de Leon sailed into Biscayne Bay in 1513, making him the first European man to see the Miami area. At that time the area was called Chequescha (Miami's first known name). Pedro Menendez de Aviles claimed Miami area for Spain in 1566. The first Spanish mission was established in 1567.

    Establishing the City of Miami
    During Florida's Great Freeze of 1894 the crops of Miami were the only crops to survive. Local citrus grower Julia Tuttle convinced railroad tycoon Henry Flagler to expand his Florida East Coast Railroad to Miami. Miami became an incorporated city on uly 28, 1896. The population at that time was about 300 persons.
