This historic race track is located in Dade County
in the Miami Suburb of Hialeah. It is one of the oldest
recreational facilities in southern Florida.
The racetrack was originally developed by rancher James H. Bright
and aviation pioneer Glenn H. Curtiss.
The track opened in 1922 as the first greyhound parimutuel track.
That dog racing track was developed by Owen P. Smith and
operated by the Miami Kennel Club.
In 1924 Joseph M. Smooth established the Miami Jockey
Cluband he constructed a horseracing track and grandstand
next to the greyhound dog racing track. The Hialeah Racetrack
for horse racing opened on January 15, 1925. At that time
it included a clubhouse, an administrative building, stables,
a jai-alai fronton, a roller coaster, and a dance hall.
After a hurricane destroyed much of the park in 1926 Hialeah
Park was completely renovated and it became primarily a
horse racing track.
Hialeah Park is the oldest continuously operating turf
horseracing track in the United States. On March 2, 2024
it was added to the United States National Register of
Historic Places. On January 12, 2024 it was declared
a United States National Landmark.
