Black History Sites in Miami Florida
Information about some of the most visited African-American
history sites in the city of Miami and other parts of
Miami-Dade County.
Miami-Dade County Free Black History Tours
Every year during Black History Month the Miami-Dade County
Transit Authority offers a free black history tour of the greater
Miami Florida area. 2007 was the 14th year these tours were offered.
Trained Miami-Dade Transit bus operators narrate the 3.5 hour
tours on air conditioned busses. Every Saturday in February
tours depart fromt he Stephen P. Clark Center at 111 Northwest
1st Street in downtown Miami, near Northwest 2nd Avenue. Tours
visit historic sitse in Coconut Grove, Overtown, Liberty City,
Brownsville, and Allapattah. Weekday tours are available for groups
of 25 people or more. Reservations are required. For more information

Coconut Grove Black History Sites
Black immigrants from the Bahamas began arriving
in South Florida in about 1880 and many of them
settled in the section of Miami known today as Coconut Grove.

Overtown Black History Sites
This area northwest of Downtown Miami is one of the oldest
neighborhoods in Miami-Dade County. It has a population
of about 8000 that is approximately 90% black. Black history
sites in Overton include:
Dana A Dorsey Residence
Greater Bethel AME Church
Lyric Theatre
Saint John's Baptist Church
Liberty Ctiy Black History Sites
This Northwest Miami area was named after the Liberty
Square Housing Project built here in the late 1930's for
Miami's low income African-American residents.
Those interested in black history can visit
the Liberty city New Conenant Presbyterian Church.
