The Coral Gables Biltmore Hotel was built in 1926
by John McEntee Bowman and George Merrick as part
of the Biltmore chain of hotels. It was designed
by Schultze and Weaver. When it was first built it
surpassed downtown Miami's Freedom tower as the tallest
building in Florida. It held that honor until the
taller Dade County Courthouse was built in 1928.
At one time the hotel's swimming pool was the largest
in the world. For a time, future Tarzan actor Johnny Weissmuller
worked there as a swimming istructor.
The building was used as a hotel until World War II, at which
time it was temporarily used as a veteran's hospital.
After the war it was used by the University of Miami as their
medical school until 1968. In 1987 the building was again
used as a hotel under the management of the Seaways Hotel
Corporation.
