Little Havana District of Miami
South, Florida

An introduction to the Little Havana District of the city of Miami Florida. The district was named after the city of Havana which is the capital of Cuba and that country's largest city. The neighborhood is a center of the Cuban exile community in the United States, but there are are also large enclaves of Cubans in Hialeah and other parts of the greater Miami area.

Little Havana is a district in the west central part of the city of Miami that has developed into a center of Cuban and Latin American culture. At one time this area was almost completely a Cuban district but now there are also a large number of Nicaraguans and Puerto Ricans living here also.

    Maximo Gomez Domino Park
    This park is an important meeting place in Miami's Little Havana District. It was anmed after a revolutionary who fought against the Spanish in Cuba during the 19th Century. Maximo Gomez Park has domino tables and chess tables.

    Viernes Culturales (Cultural Friday)
    The last Friday of every month an event called "Viernes Culturales" ("Cultural Friday")takes place on Southwest 8th Street between 14th Avenue and 17th Avenue in Little Havana. It is a cultural event and block party featuring the music, dancing, peotry, arts, and crafts of Cuba and other Caribbean and Latin American countries. The event typically begins about 6:30 pm and ends about 11:00 pm.

    Calle Ocho Carnival in Little Havana
    Every year there is a Cuban festival in Little Havana called "Calle Ocho" which is part of the city-wide "Carnival Miami" event. That event is a free street festival sponsored by the local Kiwanis Club that typically attracts more then 1 million visitors. The entire Hispanic community celebrates this event by wearing colors and or carrying flags representing the country of their heritage. During the festival more then 30 stages are set up for all types of Caribbean music, dancing, and other entertainment. There are also hundreds of street vendors selling food and products from Caribbean countries. The festival takes place on Calle Ocho (Southwest 8th Street) between 27th Avenue and 4th Avenue.
